IDEAtlas in the News again

IDEAtlas, together with our Co-anchor ReNaBap, has been featured again in the news, this time in the Spanish newspaper El Pais. The article was published after two new informal settlements that had not been registered before were identified, and it opened the discussion on the fact that we should spotlight the problems with living conditions instead of blurring them. Check out the whole article for yourself here (in Spanish).

Living Lab Latin America

The Living Lab in Medellin and Buenos Aires were held on 26 April. In each city, an onsite venue was arranged for around 10-20 participants. The Living Lab was held in Spanish to avoid language barriers and to allow for the full participation of local users. The presentations were given by a Spanish speaker of the ITC team.

The Living Lab on site had short presentations: two of them were carried out by the IDEAtlas member, where the mission and the workshop workflow were reported; and three short introductory presentations by each city-representative, where each city talked about their work on deprivation modelling. Mexico also presented briefly the work done by INEGI

Most of the time was left for participants to brainstorm and discuss in groups. Each city  was having their own discussion workshop, and IDEAtlas members were supporting online.

Living Lab Salvador

The Living Lab in Salvador was divided into a two-day workshop, and took place on 30th and 31st of March. The first session, on the 30th took place virtually, and focused on the discussions with the national stakeholders from several different levels (governments, research institutions, and universities). The second session, on the 31st, took place on-site, at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), and focused on the discussions with the local and regional stakeholders (local government and representatives of communities).

Considering the two days of workshop, the Living Lab attracted diverse participation – from academia, National and regional Statistics institutes (IBGE), Space Agency (INPE), Planning Agencies, Disaster’s monitoring Center (CEMADEN), NGOs, and Communities associations. This was reached by personal invitations of key stakeholders, in particular, local and national governments (e.g., IBGE, INPE, Prefeitura de Salvador, and Ministry of Cities) and community groups and associations. In total of the two days, we had the participation of more than 60 people. During the presential day, the venue we had was allowing around 20+ participants, and the venue was full, having two very active half-day workshop.

To be more inclusive with all the institutions and communities, due to the difficulty of some people on speaking English, the workshops were conducted in Portuguese. On both days, the living lab had short presentations to introduce the project and stimulate the discussions on the main topics of the workshop, leaving most of the time for the participants to discuss and brainstorm on the raised questions.

Living Lab Lagos

The Living Lab in Lagos was held after the kick-off meeting of IDEAMAPS in Lagos. As part of the activities, also community visits and discussions with community leaders were held.

The Living Lab attracted diverse participation – from academia, NSO, Space Agency, Planning Department, NGOs, and Communities. This was reached by personal invitations of key stakeholders, in particular, local and national governments (e.g., LASURA, Space Agency, NSO) and community groups. Besides invitations, we had an open registration form shared via social media, where, in total, 50 people registered for in-person and online participation. The venue we had was allowing around 30+ participants, and the venue was full, having a very active full-day workshop. A problem during the workshop was the continuous power cuts.

The living lab on site had short presentations on the main topics of the workshop, leaving most of the time for the participants to work in groups to brainstorm on flipchart papers, groups discussion and group presentations.
